Whether you’re interested in vocal performance, instrumental music, teaching, managing or just improving your musical knowledge, Frostburg State University’s Music program has something for you! The FSU Music program offers a challenging bachelor’s degree in all aspects of music, including performance, history, pedagogy and theory. You will receive a strong background in the basics of musical performance and have your choice of a broad variety of ensembles to join. You'll learn your art through classroom lessons and performances, providing confidence for auditions.

Music Program Highlights

  • Participate in a well-rounded liberal arts music program that will provide you with a solid foundation in basics like pedagogy and management and will fine-tune your skills with ample performance experiences.

  • Choose from a Bachelor of Science or Arts in music teaching certification, music education, Pathway to MAT (5-year program), instrumental music performance, vocal music performance, music industry, music studies, jazz studies minor, music minor or musical theatre minor.

  • Shine in the classroom and on the stage. FSU’s Performing Arts Center features fully equipped MIDI and piano labs, two rehearsal halls and an exquisite recital hall with seating for over 450 patrons.

  • Take your pick from a wide variety of instrumental and vocal ensembles, including Wind Ensemble and University Chorale, along with smaller ensembles like Brass, String, Guitar, Woodwind, Percussion and Piano. You can also join specialized musical groups like Jazz Orchestra, Marching Band, Vocal Jazz Ensemble, Chamber Choir and the Opera Workshop.

  • Travel to perform for audiences beyond the campus community (such as the Chamber Choir’s tour in Italy and instrumental and vocal ensemble tours in the Mid-Atlantic region), as well as attending top performances in New York City and other metro areas.

The program will prepare you for an increasingly competitive professional world by fostering your musical, intellectual and personal development. Trained musical artists can find opportunities to perform for various venues and occasions, such as weddings, churches, bars, recording studios, musical theater, military ensembles and orchestras. Formal training in music can also lead to many careers other than performance, including sound engineer, composer, director, conductor, entertainment lawyer, instrument care, music store associate, talent scout, music therapist, critic, theatre staff and more.

What You'll Learn

FSU’s Music program is rigorous with studies in theory, history, ear training and performance through experiential and innovative classroom methods. Our curriculum sets high standards, comparable to music conservatories. You will work with our expert faculty one-on-one in weekly lessons and participate in multiple ensembles to increase your ability on your voice and/or instrument. Music industry majors will record and produce concerts. Future educators apply their training with students in local schools. We encourage performance majors to play and sing in local venues, competitions and participate in statewide tours.
